Fire Apparatus Measurements For Design and Roads and Fire Lanes

These are the results of measurements of Ladder Truck 13, the first due ladder truck on campus. The results were that a 24 foot wide fire lane will accommodate this large equipment easily on a straight away and if gentle curves are added, most likely will accommodate that. However, where a significant turn (like 90 deg) is needed, a 24' x 24' lane tee will not allow a reliable turning opportunity. While flaring out the approaches to such an intersection would help alleviate this, it probably would not look very good. So, what we would recommend at these intersections is a 40 foot diameter circle with the center of the circle on the intersection point of the two centerlines. This broadens the intersection for turning the large apparatus without really strange looking intersections. 40 ft is the minimum that will work and there cannot be light poles, trees and like objects immediately along the fire lane that the trucks may hit. If you wanted a safety margin in all of this, I would recommend that the intersection circles be of 45 ft. diameter.
