Fire Safety Guidelines for Laboratories

Laboratories generally contain equipment and flammable and reactive chemicals which can present potential fire hazards. To minimize the risk of injury, illness or property damage due to fires, the following control methods should be applied:

• Control the presence and use of ignition sources, flammables and combustibles
within each laboratory.
• Conduct routine fire inspections to identify and mitigate fire hazards using the
Laboratory Safety Survey. Avoid excessive accumulations of combustible materials
(waste, boxes, papers, etc.)
• Keep combustibles away from ignition sources (hot plates, heating mantles, and
other heat- or spark-producing devices).
• Plan work to minimize the storage of excess flammable and combustible chemicals
and keep quantities to a minimum.
