Energy Savings Realized in Campus Center

Campus Facilities Services (CFS) and the Campus Center are pleased to announce a power savings initiative in respect to the escalators located in the Campus Center.  As a result of a recent CFS energy savings study it was determined that wear and tear on equipment and $5,000 in utility costs would be saved if the escalators were turned off seven hours per night.  

Therefore, effective Wednesday, October 28, 2009, the escalators at the Campus Center will be turned off at the time the building closes each night and turned back on each morning when the Campus Center opens to the public. The escalators will also remain off any time the Campus Center is closed to the public including, but not limited to, semester breaks and federal holidays.  It should be noted that once the escalator units have been shut off, anyone in the building must use either the elevators or stairs to move between floors.

"I am very pleased that our good partners in CFS continue to help us explore multiple ways to be 'a little bit greener' in the Campus Center; their commitment to energy sustainability is commendable and I would like to thank the CFS staff members, Jeff Plawecki, James Walsh, Will Morrison, John Kamman, John Drew and Rick Williams, for their efforts," stated Dan Maxwell, Director of the IUPUI Campus Center.  
In addition, further energy savings is realized due to the Campus Center's policy of keeping the meeting rooms locked and the lights off when the rooms are not in use.  All tenants of the Campus Center are strongly encouraged to shut off their personal office lights and suite lights at the end of each day. 

Through collaborative efforts like this IUPUI is moving closer to the goal of reducing our carbon footprint.
